The legends of The Undying King Agannon also speak of his most loyal of servants - Wolfram.
Betrayed by the Gods for his service, this paladin fell to disillusion - leading him to swearing an oath of conquest and vengeance to his new dark master. His oath would take him beyond death and grant him untold strength - their unholy pact would create the first Death Knight.
Agannon granted him a blade of terrible power and origin. Embedded within the guard was one of several phylacteries hidden throughout space.. and time. With the blade, Wolfram could siphon the souls of those around him to feed the phylactery embedded within. If Agannon should fall - he would be be tasked with feeding the phylactery and bringing the blade back to his master's domain.
Aurik, The Godking failed to destroy Agannon and decided that an eternal prison would be his punishment. Part of this plan lured Wolfram to slaughter his old order of paladins. Wolfram entered the holy bastion and cut down his old brethren one by one. Their shields shattered beneath the might of his deadly flail and their bodies withered with each slash from his terrible blade.
This was all a trap set by the divine, as the holy walls of the order were inscribed with divine magic. The incantations created a near impenetrable barrier to keep all that is evil out... or within. Aurik had used the paladins as bait to draw the Death Knight within his new prison - sealing him away for centuries.
Their stories became myths and fabled tales - a group of adventurers unknowingly opened the ancient holy bastion. Wolfram cut down all who stood in his way - his old withered body moved with the strength of several knights. The corpse of his old steed reassembled and the paladins he murdered reanimated as loyal servants.
With the Return of Agannon and the turning of The Mortal Engine, Wolfram was also imbued with great power as his strength grew with Agannon. He eventually wielded the power of a Demigod when Agannon ascended as the new God of Undeath.
