The Grinning Man

Centuries ago, a cruel Kaedrim nobleman had become the acting leadership of the large town of Redcross. This wasn’t through popular demand by any means, he bought his way to the top for unknown reasons. Most assumed he wanted to hoard his wealth or avoid taxes from their vampiric overlords.

Unfortunately, his actions lead to the continued or increased suffering of the people of Redcross. The people grew restless and a terrible rage began to fester. The nobleman continued treating those around him worse and worse.

Eventually the townsfolk gathered in secret to discuss what to do about the nobleman. A young woman that no one knew came from the shadows of the dark hall and when she spoke she seemed to command the room.

“People of Redcross, when the sun sets we should no longer cower beneath the terrible boot of Ormenvahlen nobility! Bring him to the twisted oak tree deep in the Ebonwood. Hang him for his crimes and cruelties!”

The crowd looked bewildered at first, but everyone started to nod and agree. They all felt she said exactly what they were thinking, as if her words had power over their thoughts.

One of the townsfolk questioned

“What about Lord Tenebrae? What if he finds ou-”

“The vampires will never find him if you bring him to the twisted oak. I or rather, The Ebonwood will make sure of it.” the young woman replied.
A few townsfolk found her statement odd, but were quickly swept up in the townfolks leaving to prepare for the night ahead.

-

The sun fell on Redcross and the townfolk gathered outside the nobleman’s manor. Pitchforks, torches, ropes and more in hand. Eventually they overwhelmed the manor grounds and forced their way in.

As several of them surrounded the nobleman in his office, oddly unafraid with a grin across his face.

“You fools realize if you lay a hand on me Lord Tenebrae will have all your heads. Even for this, I could maybe convince him to only drain a number of you as an example. Despite how you feel about me, I am much more merciful than a vampire.” The noblemen said.

The townfolks blinded by rage ignored the threats of retribution. They grabbed the noblemen and dragged him outside his manor to the rest of the crowd. Someone from behind him threw a burlap sac over his head as they dragged him out of Redcross.

What felt like a strangely short walk, the townsfolk found themselves at the twisted oak deep within the forest. The young woman was already their waiting for them.

The townsfolk slung the rope over a large branch of the tree and the noblemen continued to threaten even till the bitter end.

“The Council will not stand for this! End this now and the punishment won’t be as severe! You fools!

They tied the noose around the noble and pulled the rope taut. A few noticed the strangeness of what was occurring as he hanged there. The townsfolk began to utter a strange chant. All had a blank stare as they chanted and tied the rope to a thick root of twisted oak. The young woman walked up the hanging nobleman and as she approached her form shifted. Eventually a nightmarish hag from dark tales of the woods stood before them.

Those that continued the chant were unresponsive to anything occurring around them. The townsfolk that resisted the hags dark magic were horrified as the hag began a new incantation as the noble's struggle ended.

-

Then as if a nightmare ending, it was morning as the townsfolk awoke in their beds. Those that saw something strange that night had vague fuzzy memories and those that were chanting had no recollection of what occurred.

The town was free from the nobleman and his cruel ways. It appeared that he had left town in a hurry. No sign of the townsfolk breaking into the manner or taking the noble man to the Ebonwood.

-

The reality is that townsfolk were spared from witnessing the true horror of the dark incantations of the hag. She suggested that they go home to their bed and forget this cursed night. Then the townsfolk began mindlessly walking back to town through the Ebonwood.

The hag cackled as her incantation was almost complete.

"There aren't too many mortals as vile as you! Precisely what I need!" as she points one of her long crooked nails at the hanged noble.

Evil magic swirled around the twisted tree and noble. Time seemed to run rapidly as the moon and sun raced across the sky above the twisted oak. As the nobles clothes seems to withered from the elements, the magic began to infuse his form.

Slowly his body stretched until his toes reached the ground below him. The withered burlap sack tied over his head had torn revealing glimpses of horrid grin from the creature beneath. The noose was embedded in his broken neck and his long fingers could not remove it.
His elongated arm stretched towards the hag holding his hand out. The hag placed a crude runic knife in his palm. Slowly he raised his hand and cut the rope. The rope tied to him defied gravity and appear taut as if he was still hanging. He lowered himself to look at the hag eye to eye as the sound of the rope tightening filled the air.

"Good. Nice and obedient. Now go taste the fear of those that dare enter The Ebonwood." the hag said as she began a maddening cackle.

The Grinning Man stood tall as it loomed over the hag. Numerous strange jagged limbs manifested from his back as his form seemed to blur, blink or flicker from reality.
